Swan figure, symbolism, mythology, ZeitgeistAbstract
The present paper intends to trace a brief panorama of the swan figure in the context of symbolist poetics, albeit starting from its presence in ancient Greek literature and mythology, which symbolism dialogues with. It backtracks the emblematic swan figure found in the poem “Le Vierge, le vivace et le bel aujourd’hui”, by Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898), read in dialogue with the poems “L’Albatros” and “Le Cygne”, by Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), with the sonets “Sobre o cisne de Stéphane Mallarmé” and “O cisne e o lago”, by Eduardo Guimaraens (1892-1928) and with the fairytale “The Ugly Duckling”, by Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), in an attempt to expose the transformations and nuances this symbol has suffered along the centuries, its permanence and continuity in the nineteenth century zeitgeist and the relation it establishes with the tradition.
