Use of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy associated with endodontic treatment

Aim: To analyze the effectiveness of using antimicrobial photodynamic therapy associated with conventional endodontic treatment.
Methods: This is an integrative literature review through advanced search in the National Library of Medicine (Medline/Pubmed) and Scielo databases. The descriptors used were “Endodontics; Disinfection; Photochemotherapy; Low Intensity Light Therapy” and its synonyms recognized by the Mesh and Decs vocabularies. Evaluated clinical trials and systematic reviews in English and Portuguese were included, and which addressed adult individuals.
Results: 10 studies were selected which addressed the use of aPDT as a treatment for root canal infections. As for the clinical trials included in the research, the results demonstrate a reduction in bacterial load and even its total elimination after treatment with PDT in root canal infections, in addition to the suppression of multi-resistant bacteria.
Conclusion: aPDT associated with endodontic treatment is an effective means of reducing bacterial load, promoting control and elimination of bacteria multi-resistant to mechanical chemical preparation during endodontic treatment. Therefore, it becomes an increasingly common, effective and safe therapy to avoid failures in root canal treatment.
