Abstract

This text briefly returns to a set of questions about the history of football in Lourenço Marques during the colonial period, deepening some dimensions of the research work I initially published in 2012 - the book Futebol e Colonialismo. Corpo e Cultura Popular em Moçambique. These are, first, the relationship of football with the colonial social stratification, the new urban world and the formation of social identities; second, the question of masculinity in an urban context and the transformations of African power structures;  third, the debate about colonial modernity, originally expressed through football’s performances, which has in the confrontation between orality and writing one of its most fruitful laboratories; finally, these observations close with a reflection on how the history of soccer in Mozambique constitutes a social, performative and aesthetic experience useful to question contemporary soccer.
