Abstract

Many Brazilian women suffer with unplanned pregnancy. The purpose of this research is to describe how pregnant women experience pregnancy. The research method was ethno-nursing, and oral history was used to interview ten pregnant women living in a low income community. The cultural theme was "The uncertainty of the future: making hard adaptations in life and asking God to show the right way". The essence of nursing care must be directed to the preservation of cultural care and, from the point of view of the health care institution, the prenatal care available must be restructured and, above all, women must be empowered.
