Sharing experiences with society and the scientific community in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic: the production of a university extension project

Abstract

With the Covid-19 pandemic, many dental extension projects had to suspend their practical activities in outpatient clinics. Many of these projects had to adapt to the new conditions of isolation and sought dialogue with society in various ways. The objective of this article is to describe the experience of a dental extension project in its dialogue with patients, the community and academia. Method: The products of project 400042 “Dental Care for Patients with Developmental Disabilities” were listed on the SIEX platform. From these products, their impact on the academic community was described through consultations with Google Academics, Scopus, Clarivate and ResearchGate. The impact of information intended for patients and their guardians was consulted on You Tube metrics. Results: the ResearchGate platform proved to be the one that most actively promoted dialogue with the academic community. Through it, it was possible to measure the readers' interest, the total number of citations, readings and recommendations. The videos featured on You Tube had a moderate amount of views. Conclusion: the ResearchGate platform was an important tool for exchanging experiences. You Tube, in turn, has a restricted reach when analyzing direct communication with the target audience.
