Abstract
This study proposes to survey and analyze the colonial altarpieces with false architecture painting in Minas Gerais. It realises that some brotherhoods opted for the solution of making altars of false architecture, with the pictorial imitation of the compositional elements of the altars, such as columns, cornices, corbels and festoons applied to completely flat surfaces or with very few woodcarving elements. The aim is to outline an overview of the use of this kind of trompe-l'oeil to forge architecture on the altars of colonial Brazil. After that, the copies from Minas Gerais are organized, grouped, described, and analyzed, in order to identify similarities of artists and/or schools of painting. It also observes a continuity of the technique of altarpieces with false architecture painting throughout the 19th century. It purposes to expand knowledge about the Baroque and Rococo of Minas Gerais and Brazil.
