Classic and Romantic as Analytical Categories in José Guilherme Merquior’s Critical Essays on Modern Literature

Abstract: Particularly since mid-20th century the literary studies see some problems in the heuristic usefulness of concepts like “period style”. Nevertheless the terms “classic” and “romantic” continue favoring interesting interpretations, when they are applied to analysis of works written after classical period and romanticism. Not only famous critics, but also many scholars make use of these terms in order to characterize and interpret the contemporary literature. José Guilherme Merquior, a literary critic of the mid-20th century, made use of both of them. “Classic” for the purpose of putting into aesthetic context and analysing appropriately Carlos Drummond de Andrade’s, Murilo Mendes’ and João Cabral de Melo Neto’s poetry published in the 1950s. “Romantic” for the purpose of reflecting on the western modern art and literature from Charles Baudelaire. This article aims to discuss the use of those terms by Merquior.
