Christophe Honoré’s Reception of Ovid
The Indecorous Boldness of the Metamorphoses
Keywords:

Acording to Quintilian’s comments on Ovid’s production, this paper presents an interpretation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses in relation with its medial transposition to cinema in the film Les Métamorphoses, directed by Christophe Honoré (2014), in order to point out the mutual and multidirectional character of classical reception. I investigate how Honoré structures his film not only on mythological content, but also on many formal and poetic features from Ovid’s work, and I analyse the way both artists break with the decorum conventions of their own time and create in their works a poetics of refined boldness. Furthermore, I discuss the fact that Ovid and Honoré insert meta-poetic or meta-cinematographic reflections in their works, in order to think critically about the fluidity of the boundaries between world, work and tradition.
