Given the large number of elderly people in Brazil, Public Health Policy has established goals to promote a healthier and safer lifestyle. However, senior care at Basic Health Units also requires changes and adaptations to the various local realities. This study aimed at analyzing the service provided at Basic Health Units from the perspective of a group of elderly women. The qualitative cross-sectional study was carried out in July 2008 in Coronel Fabriciano - MG. The reports indicated that users were satisfied with services provided at Basic Health Unit, namely the educational lectures on preexisting diseases and healthy eating. Services are expected to improve through an increase in the number of health professionals (doctors, nurses, nutritionists, and psychologists), compliance with Law No. 10741/2003 on preferential and immediate care, increased availability and quality of medication, and more guidance and monitoring of diabetic patients. Based on the Health Pact and the elderly women’s point of view on the care at Basic Health Units, municipal, state and federal public policies should reassess health teams’ actions as well as define health goals in conjunction with the service’s users so health needs are identified and incorporated into clinical practice.Downloads
