The science of conservation and restoration plays an important role on identifying the complex physical, mineralogical, chemical and biological process of changing building materials. The city of Belém, known as the gateway to the Amazon, holds a great number of heritage buildings, which are suffering due the weathering actions. The historical facade tiles are inserted in this situation and have distinct alterations, in which one of the most frequent is the biological deterioration. The aim of this work is to explain the microbiological process acting in ancient tiles, as they occur and what they cause to the tiles. The results indicate the processes of colonization, in which types of microorganisms and the result of their development on tiles were described. Understanding this process allows proceeding properly in the treatment of biodeterioration and suggests ways to prevent further colonization.
